Keys for pre-facelift models (2002-2004):
These are the clamshell style keys with an external blade. As of November 2025, these may or may not be available from MINI, or they may be on backorder.

This is the two button "Valeo" remote key. Key will arrive from MINI with the blade cut properly and ready to start the car. There will be a separate charge from the dealer to code the car to accept commands from this remote. This key has a user replaceable CR2032 battery.

Keys for post-facelift models (2005-2006) and convertibles (2005-2008):
These are the flat, three button keys with an external blade. As of November 2025, these should still be available from MINI.

This is the flat, three button "BMW" remote key. Key will arrive from MINI with the blade cut properly and ready to start the car. There is a short pairing sequence involving turning the ignition on and off and pushing the key buttons in a specific sequence to "pair" the remote with the car. This key has a rechargeable battery which charges in the ignition as the car is driven.

Keys for second generation MINIs (2007- 2016):
These are the round, three button keys with a removable blade key and a chrome trim ring around the outside. Should still be available from MINI. Some third generation models were introduced starting in 2014 and use a different key.

Standard round, three button MINI key. Key will arrive from MINI ready to start the car. There is no pairing procedure for the remote other than to take the car for a short drive during which time the remote will pair itself with the car. This key has a rechargeable battery that charges up while the key is in the slot and the car is being driven.

Round, three button MINI key for cars factory equipped with the "Comfort Access" option. Key will arrive from MINI ready to start the car. The "Standard" remote functions will pair when the car is taken for a short drive with the key in the slot. There will be a separate charge from the dealer to code the car to activate the "Comfort Access" functions on this remote. This key does have a user replaceable CR2032 battery under a cover on the back of the key.
